    Quality That Lasts

    Materials & Finishes

The finest materials, expertly finished, built to last for generations

A beautiful kitchen starts with beautiful materials. We're selective about what goes into our cabinets, choosing sustainable hardwoods over chipboard, real joinery over assembly-line construction, and finishes that look better with age.

Here's what makes a Blackthorn kitchen different, and why our cabinets will still be going strong long after flat-pack alternatives have been replaced.

    Cabinet Materials

Every cabinet is built from real hardwood, sustainably sourced and selected for durability, stability, and beauty.

    Tulipwood

    Our primary cabinet material

We build all our cabinets from tulipwood (American yellow poplar), a sustainably sourced hardwood that's perfect for painted finishes. It machines beautifully, holds paint exceptionally well, and is more stable than many alternatives.

    • Sustainably sourced from managed forests
    • Excellent for painted finishes
    • Stable and resistant to warping
    • Close, even grain for smooth surfaces
    • Stronger and more durable than MDF

Unlike MDF or particle board, tulipwood is a real hardwood that will last for generations. It's also better for your home, with no off-gassing of formaldehyde or other chemicals.

    Oak

    For natural timber elements

English and European oak feature throughout our kitchens for elements that showcase natural timber: worktops, shelving, breakfast bars, and interior drawer boxes. Its distinctive grain and warm tones bring character to any kitchen.

    • Beautiful natural grain patterns
    • Incredibly durable and hardwearing
    • Ages gracefully over time
    • Perfect for worktops and shelving
    • Traditional material with timeless appeal

Oak has been used in English furniture making for centuries. Its strength, beauty, and longevity make it the natural choice for elements that will see daily use.

    Walnut

    Luxury timber option

For clients seeking something special, American black walnut offers rich, dark tones and exceptional beauty. We use it for drawer interiors, feature shelving, and statement pieces that take a kitchen design to the next level.

    • Rich, deep chocolate tones
    • Stunning grain character
    • Luxurious appearance
    • Perfect for feature elements
    • Pairs beautifully with brass hardware

Walnut is the ultimate expression of craftsmanship. When clients want their kitchen to make a statement, walnut details deliver that sense of considered luxury.

    Paint & Finishes

From hand-painted colour to natural timber finishes, options to suit every style.

    Hand-Painted

Our most popular finish. Cabinets are hand-painted in our workshop using premium furniture paints. Choose any colour and we can match any paint brand or create custom shades.

    • Any colour of your choice
    • Multiple coats for durability
    • Beautiful, brushed finish
    • Easy to touch up if needed
    • Colours matched to any sample

    Primer-Ready

Cabinets delivered fully primed and sanded, ready for on-site painting by your chosen decorator. Perfect if you want to coordinate with wall colours or have a preferred painter.

    • Fully primed with premium primer
    • Sanded smooth and ready to paint
    • Professional-grade preparation
    • Flexibility to choose final colour later
    • Ideal for colour-sensitive decisions

    Natural Timber

For exposed oak or walnut elements, we apply a clear, hardwearing finish that protects the wood while showcasing its natural beauty. Options include oil, lacquer, or wax finishes.

    • Highlights natural grain
    • Durable protective coating
    • Easy to maintain
    • Can be refinished over time
    • Choice of sheen levels

    Hardware & Ironmongery

Premium hardware that looks beautiful and lasts a lifetime.

    Blum

    Hinges & Drawer Systems

Austrian-made Blum hardware is the industry standard for quality. Soft-close hinges and drawer runners come as standard on all our cabinets, built to last a lifetime of daily use.

    Brass

    Handles & Knobs

Solid brass hardware adds warmth and character. We offer unlacquered brass (which develops a beautiful patina) or lacquered brass (which stays bright). Burnished, antique, and aged brass also available.

    Chrome & Nickel

    Handles & Knobs

Polished chrome offers contemporary shine, while brushed nickel provides a softer, more traditional look. Both are durable, easy to clean, and complement a range of cabinet colours.

    Iron & Bronze

    Handles & Knobs

For period properties and rustic kitchens, forged iron and bronze hardware add authentic character. We source traditional designs from specialist British manufacturers.

    Worktops & Surfaces

While we focus on cabinet making, we work closely with trusted worktop specialists to complete your kitchen. Our partners supply:

Granite surfaces in all colours and finishes
    Quartz worktops (Silestone, Caesarstone, etc.)
Marble for those seeking classic elegance
Solid oak and other timber worktops
    Corian and solid surface options
    Dekton and ultra-compact surfaces

We'll advise on the best worktop options for your kitchen and can coordinate with templating and installation on your behalf.

    Care & Maintenance

Our kitchens are built to last, and caring for them is straightforward.

    Painted Cabinets

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Minor chips can be touched up with matching paint. We provide touch-up supplies with every kitchen.

    Natural Timber

Oak and walnut elements can be refreshed with occasional oiling. We recommend Danish oil or similar, applied once or twice a year depending on use.

    Brass Hardware

Unlacquered brass develops a natural patina over time. Many clients love this aged look. To maintain shine, polish occasionally with a brass cleaner.
